Demand for home care services is on the rise as more and more elderly people made the decision to stay in their home. Home care agencies offer a variety of rewarding positions, both clinical and non-clinical. There are many benefits to taking a job in home care including flexible hours, long-term placement with the same patients so you get to know them and good pay.

Here are a few positions that can be had through a home care agency.

Home Health Aide or CNA

Home health aide and CNAs are trained professionals who go to a patient’s home and help them to take care of themselves. They can assist with grooming and bathing, meal preparation, and light household duties. They can also help the patient with activities of daily living such as learning to walk with a cane, how to perform personal hygiene, and how to eat with special utensils. They can teach family members how to care for the loved one such as ways to assist the loved one to stand and how to help them out of bed.

Both the home health aide and CNA work under the supervision of a home care nurse.

Home Care Nurse

Home care nurses work with patients on a long-term basis. Home care nurses perform all or most of the nursing functions they would perform at a facility, but they work with the patient in their home. The nurse may also do other duties such as light physical therapy in order to help the patient be more independent in the home.

The nurse is responsible for managing all of the patient’s medications and being in contact with the patient’s physician to alert them to any changes in the patient’s status. Sometimes, the home care nurse specializes in a form of care, such as would care. Frequently, home care nurses have several patients they see on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The amount of time they spend with each patient and the frequency with which they see the patient depends on the patient’s level of independence and the seriousness of their condition.

Home Care Social Worker

The social workers primary function is to determine the psychosocial problems or needs of the patient and the patient’s family. The social worker will make recommendations of public services that can best benefit the elderly patient and the family. The social worker will also create goals for the family to work toward and will provide assistance with reaching those goals.

Not every home care patient needs the services of a social worker but those that do usually see the social worker on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The home care social worker also provides counseling and assistance to the patient’s family.
